Use our Powers for GOOD

I’ve been teaching from James 3 the last couple of weeks.  I’m just stuck on it.  I keep thinking about it and hearing OTHER scripture that supports it.  Proverbs talks about it…

Telling lies about others is as harmful as hitting them with an ax, wounding them with a sword, or shooting them with a sharp arrow. Prov. 25:18

It’s comparing lying about another to murder.  I guess you might not MURDER someone if you hit them with a ax, sword or arrow, but then again, you might.  Either way, lying about others is BAD.  We know this.  It’s a truth that we should know very well, but we still do it.  Gossip is the ugly UNTRUTH and sometimes something we get sucked into before we know it.

I’ve already shared this in a blog, but as I said, things just keep coming up about it.

It’s in the commandments:

“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” -Exodus 20:16

I am not sure why it just keeps coming up.  Maybe I need to shut my lips more!  HA!  I’m pretty sure I need to do that.  My mouth gets me in trouble sometimes.  I like to think it also does great things as well, but as it says in James—

(9-10)  With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.

We can’t be committed to doing both.  We need to PRAISE OUR LORD AND FATHER and not curse those HE has made.  We need to use our words for God.   We should allow Him to use our mouths to lead others to Him.  We should encourage, praise, lift up, build and help others using our words as well as our actions.  I know it’s better to DO than talk, but we use both words and actions all the time—WE NEED TO USE THEM for good, not bad.

Words and actions are both powers we have…

I pray we can all use our powers for good.

Amen.

Here are some other verses about the power of our words:

Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Matthew 15:18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.

Proverbs 12:18 There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Matthew 12:36 I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak,

Proverbs 16:24 Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.

Colossians 3:8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.

Matthew 12:37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.
