I’m Up!

I’m up! I’m up and functional at 5:30 am on a Saturday morning. Not a regular work day but kind of.

After working basketball concession and the tortilla toss event all evening on a Friday night, getting home around 9:30, not winding down until about 11:30 and falling into some kind of slumber after that, I’m back up with my ready writers at a UIL event.  Yes, I’m up!

There are so many teachers that do this kind of thing all the time. We get up early and stay at work late. We support our students at athletic events, band concerts, agricultural shows, scholastic competitions and much more.  Sometimes we are there coaching, sometimes we are there just because. We want our students to know they are cared for and supported.  We want them to succeed in whatever they are involved in.

Some people say teachers have it so easy. We have a Monday through Friday job. (HA!) We have all the holidays off. (that IS nice, but not always true) We get the entire summer off. (Do you KNOW a teacher that truly does this???)

The summer months are nice because we do have more freedoms, but that’s after 36 weeks of an intense daily routine bombarded with other peoples’ children who come to us with all kinds of attitudes, moods, abilities and smells. I’m not griping about that, just stating it. The smells are sometimes objectionable, but for the most part, everything is all good.  Seriously, I love teaching.

What is the point of this blog?

Here ya go…

I want to remind everyone that there are teachers who really do go above and beyond their set job duties. They help, encourage and support their students. They teach not just reading, writing  and arithmetic.  They teach commitment, leadership, humbleness, putting others first and so much more!

So, I’m up!!! And I love what I do and love being around teachers who feel the same way about their job as I do.

I’M UP!!!

Art Teachers DO go to college.

IT HAPPENED AGAIN IN MY CAREER!  I had a student gasp at the fact that I had to go to college to get my art teaching job.  Wow.  This was another bump in the road of this fabulous Thursday.

First, I wake up with a headache.  Second, I had a list of crazy to do when I got to work.  Third…BAM!  “You don’t have to know anything to be an art teacher.”

I gave myself a short break to go get a drink of water and remember THIS IS A CHILD and really has no idea what she is saying.  It’s like when I was 23 and my middle school kids told me they thought I was 45.  haha!  They just have no clue.

Really.  At 23, I looked 23! I promise!

So, how do I defend myself to a child that believes I am stupid?  I don’t.  I don’t have to.  I know that I’m intelligent.  I know that she has no idea what I had to go through to get this job.  I know that I worked in college just like every other college student.  She doesn’t even understand how to get out of high school yet.

Do I need her approval?  Nope.

I have a degree.  I have a job.  I am a confidently wonderful art teacher.  I’m an ARTIST.  I’m a teacher.  My headache is pretty much gone.  My list is shorter. I’m happy.

My People!

Today we donned our new
“We are OC”

shirts the boss got for us.

I loved matching my co-workers. It might seem kind of goofy to others, but to me, it was like being part of a cool club. I loved the unity.

I love to see the pride we all take in our work and our school. I especially love to be a part of all the excitement we have for Monday.

We get to usher a new year in with our students! (BIG CRAZY SMILEY FACE HERE)

I thank God for my OC family.

They are MY PEOPLE!

Here are a few pics of the crazy group as we were going outside to pose for this year’s campus photo:

 Like I said, MY PEOPLE!

And to end this blog today, I want to praise and thank God for blessing OCHS with two leaders that are HIS people. It’s a great feeling to have bosses who know Jesus. I truly have been blessed throughout my years as a teacher to have Godly administrators.

They were both a little worried when I wanted to take a picture of them today, because apparently I’m a bit malicious when it comes to embarrassing photos or videos. Not the case today! I wanted to show these two off as my blessings…

My people, but most of all—

GOD’S PEOPLE.

The first two days…

The first two days…

Yes.  I am blessed.  The last two days back at a job I love have been blessings.

Some teachers (and other people who have to) go through meetings get frustrated and upset at times.  They worry and fret over things, because the boss is not saying what they want or a co-worker won’t stop asking questions.  Well, I recognize the fact that we are all different people, different personalities and bodies.  We have difference of opinions, mind-sets and medication.  Haha!

I LOVE THOSE DIFFERENCES!  If we were all the same…how would this world be!?!  We’d all like bananas and the color green would be our fave.  How would that even work?  Yes, we would all agree, but how would that help move anything forward.  Plain and simple, it wouldn’t.  Duhh.

Ok, I know that some of those meetings go on and on because someone can’t let go of a point. I get it. But instead of getting upset, I giggle.  NOT AUDIBLY; although, sometimes a weird sound comes out from trying to stifle the giggle.  I don’t giggle because I’m making fun…I giggle because, as I said up there…I recognize that we are all different.  I giggle with joy that GOD MADE US THAT WAY!

I do admit, I threatened a couple of co-workers with a good ole body slam yesterday, but all in fun OF COURSE. (if I could actually body slam them..that would be entertaining tho!  haha!)

Back to my original point: I AM BLESSED.  Thank You God for these first two days!!!  Excited to see what this third one holds and the many more to come.  Excitement really doesn’t even begin to describe my expectancy!

YOU complete me.

I am just a gal. One person. I have no super powers. I don’t claim to be able to do everything.  Sounds kind of boring huh?  No frills, no thrills.

Just me.

BUT, I am a

fearfully and wonderfully

made human being.

I have talents and abilities that others in my circle may not. They need me. They not only need me, but I in turn need them.  They complete me. I know that is usually used in marriage terms, but it’s true in other relationships too.

I believe that all of these people are divine appointments. That means GOD CHOSE THEM FOR ME!!!  Every single one of them. Wow!

All those around me are put in my life for a purpose. I admit the purpose is not always noticeable right at first, but it most always surfaces quickly.

I just want to give GOD all the glory for this.  I praise Him and thank HIM for helping me through His people!  I especially thank Him for His Son!

Lord, YOU complete me.

Thank You Lord!

Amen.

We are ALL teachers.

We all have those teachers that REALLY taught us.  We have those favorite ones that made us feel good about ourselves, pushed us to be our best.  Oh how safe we felt when we entered their rooms!  Those are the ones who truly influenced us the most.  They taught us so much!

BUT WE ALSO have those who made us negatively question our intelligence and confidence. They made us feel uneasy every time we saw them not only in class but at the grocery store.  Even though they were pretty much the opposite of the “favorite,” they still taught us something.

When I was in 6th grade, I politely raised my hand to ask a question.  Once called on, I asked the question.  The teacher then looked at me and told me that students like me were the reason she wanted to quit her job.  I will never ever EVER forget the way that lady made me feel.  Until that very day, she had been one of my favorite teachers.  Wow, did that change!  She will never know how much she taught me that day.  I admit, that was quite the downer for me.  I didn’t enjoy science as much after that day.  I never EVER asked another question in that class.  I wondered why she did that to me.  I don’t remember the question, but I’m certain it wasn’t anything to warrant her response.  I won’t go on and tell you about my pity party afterward.

What I want to tell you is …that she taught me to never EVER make someone feel like that.  Because of that day in 6th grade, I am a teacher that strives to make my students feel loved, cared for and IMPORTANT.

Even if I didn’t have my teaching degree, I would still be some type of teacher.  We all are!  You teach others something by your words and actions.  It’s a given.  Even if you are more of a follower, you are still leading someone.  You are setting an example at all times.  Is your example something worth following?

I learn so much from those around me …even my 10 year old child who wanted to know if Dinosaurs came before Adam and Eve?  He’s always questioning things and wanting to know more about this or that.  I love learning more and more just through his eyes.  Even at 10, he’s a teacher.  We are ALL teachers.

What have you learned today?
What have you TAUGHT today?

To the Graduates of 2015

I have so many things I’d like to tell you.

Like always brush your teeth, dental hygiene is so important.

Always be nice to others and try to smell good.  Those around you really appreciate that.

Hug people you love. (you never know when they will be gone)

Look people in the eye when you speak to them.  (not at your phone)

SMILE A LOT!

Ok, physical things like that are so important, but the MORE important things that I want to tell you are mental and spiritual.

You have to mentally prepare yourself for life.  Stay mentally focused on the good you can achieve.  Imagine yourself successful!  Don’t just think it might happen, know that you are going to ROCK THIS LIFE!

I know there are days (many days maybe) you want to just veg out and watch Netflix all day, but don’t ever make that a lifestyle.  You are made for more than pajamas and 5 seasons of The Walking Dead.  You are!  Don’t aspire to be a 30 year old couch potato that still makes your mom do your laundry.  Yes, there are days to rest and recharge and watch Netflix all day, but don’t get addicted to those.  You are made to be AWESOME!  Get up, get out and go be AWESOME!

In order to stay focused on the good, you need to always remember WHO made you.  God made us to be His.  He didn’t make mistakes or oopsies…HE MADE A WONDERFUL CREATION –THAT –IS –YOU!  Allow Him to guide you.  Allow Him to council you and protect you. You have to listen and obey.  The more you do that, the better your journey will be.  I sure wish I had listened to Him soooooo much more when I was your age.  I wish I had discovered the power of prayer earlier in my life than I did as well.  I am telling you this so YOU can get on that NOW… and not later.   It won’t make your life perfect, but it will make your life so much better.  Your perspective will be much brighter and your outlook will be much clearer.  (I want to belt out: I CAN SEE CLEAARLY NOW, THE RAIN IS GONE… I CAN SEE ALL OBSTACLES IN MY WAY…)

To the Graduates of 2015:

I have been blessed by your presence in my life.

Whether you were in my class or not…

I am so proud of you.  I know you are going to keep doing great things.

Go be AWESOME!

Much Love, Mrs. Clawson 🙂
