National Day of Service

Serving others should not be a hard task.

We should want to do what we can for other people.

On this Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service, we reflect on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through a national day of service across the country. Share your story of service throughout the day on social media using #MLKDay and follow the impact on all of our official accounts.

…He who is greatest among you, shall be your servant. -MLK, Jr

This is a holiday, yes, but I hope you were part of something more than just sleeping in late or watching Netflix all day.

As student council advisor at the school I work, I’m so proud of the students who came out and were part of a group that went to visit a local nursing home today for MLK National Day of Service.  Those kiddos get it–they get that we should serve others.  They gave their day off to go make others feel like they are important.  I’m so proud of them!

I hope you were part of something today.  I hope you were part of a service to others.

Connect for Success

From my advisor session today at leadership camp:

I thank God for great people He has put in my life.

I’m so blessed to know the people I do.
God has given me people in my life that confirm to me that HE is real. He uses people. I love to witness it. I love when He uses me too!
I have had conversations or experienced things with co-workers, friends, etc. that have helped me grow as a professional, as a friend and as a person. I thank God for these people so much!

The person I want to thank God for today (and whom I’ve thanked Him for several times in the last ten years) is my soon-to-be ex-boss, Scot Wright. I’m NOT brown-nosing here or trying to get any kind of points, you see, because he won’t be the one “taking score” on our campus this year. (if there truly is some kind of point system anyway)

In the last ten years I’ve seen him grow as an administrator and a leader. I liked him pretty instantly as a boss and it didn’t take much longer to figure out he is a great guy. He is a positive person, a dedicated person and what’s really cool: A LIFE LONG LEARNER. ((You know I love to learn!)) I know that the life long learner thing is turning into quite the buzz word here lately, but he was one of these way before it was “cool.” His character and personality is one of those that makes anyone like him quickly. He smiles, he laughs and definitely jokes around, but he can also be very serious and passionate about learning, leading and things that are important and vital to the well-being and education of our students.

Personally, he has been one of my greatest cheerleaders. He suggested I start this blog one summer and here I am a couple of years later with 737 posts and 346 followers, plus I created another blog for my class. He has encouraged me and helped me and supported me when he knew I needed it the most. He’s made me feel super smart when others have judged me as a dumb art teacher. He’s seen me cry and didn’t make fun of me. (yay!) Not being able to go in his office this upcoming school year and just sit there and talk about whatever is what I’m most sad about. I won’t be able to ask him questions about what form to fill out–a check request or purchase order (I never remember) OR ask advice about some crazy project my student council wants to try out. I won’t be able to lose my keys and have him laugh at me OR gripe at him about the bathroom and how the toilet won’t flush EVERYTHING and some people are totally against double flushing! Ew. HA! There have been quite a few times he’s made me laugh so hard about something that I keep thinking about and laughing for days. I will surely miss all that.

BUT I do have to say…I’m so happy for Mr. Wright, his lovely wife and their two kiddos. I’m sure it’s exciting to think of the opportunities he will have at his new job. His new place of employment will be fresh territory for him to share all the great attributes he possesses (that I’ve already mentioned…and more). His children, no doubt will do great at their new school. This move will be a wonderful adventure for all of them.

I’m so thankful that God allowed me to have him as my boss for ten WHOLE years. This man loves his family. He loves people. Most of all, and best of all, He loves God. It’s so awesome to work for someone who loves God.

He kids around a little too much sometimes (he made me seriously cry when he took a joke to far one time, but that is for some other blog) and at times, it’s hard to know when he’s being serious, but when he told me he took a job at a different school, I knew he was not joking. When he called me today to thank me for being great (another reason he’s great…he recognizes awesomeness…hehe), we agreed that staying in touch was important. Our girls are the same age and they will want to remain close, I’m sure. His wife is one of those people I can laugh out loud with at such crazy things (CHEWY!) no matter how long it’s been since we’ve seen each other. We gotta have another “girl day” soon!

So, even though I’m saying good-bye to Mr. Wright, I’m saying HELLO SCOT! (may I call you Scot now?!?) haha! I know I probably could have the entire time, but I call everyone at work by their last name. I’m not even sure I can call him Scot!

I know God put this family in my family’s life for purpose and again, I thank Him for it. This is NOT “good-bye” for real, this is just “I won’t see your face everyday, but we will still be friends forever no matter what!” Haha! Sounds like we need to have some kind of blood pact now. We can skip that part.

I thank God for great people He has put in my life.
May God bless Mr. Wright and his family in all! ((GO REBELS! …had to do that))

To the rebels…

The rebels…those who buck the system, ruffle feathers and cause ripples.  They get things stirred up.  They go forward when some stay back.  They stand up when most stay seated.  Rebels aren’t just soldiers like most think when we say the word “rebel”, they are thinkers and people who MOVE.   They get up and go get ’em!  They accomplish.  They win.

The Steven Jobs quote puts it best:

Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.

Today, a pack of Rebels are graduating from the high school I work.  I’m so excited for them!   I remember way back when, I graduated from this same school and was so excited, confused, sad to see my dad cry, unsure about the future and scared about the fact that I would have to be a “real” adult soon.  I know a lot of them have these same emotions.  They want to be sooo happy, but have these insecurities and “what ifs”  holding them back.  All of this comes with things that are new…when one door closes, waiting for the other door to open is just downright worrisome!

I pray for their PEACE.  I pray for their calm.  I ask God to bestow on them His ultimate grace and guidance.  I hope they all open their eyes much sooner than later that He is the only one who will NEVER EVER change in their lives and THE ONE who they should always cling to in all circumstances.

Graduation is a great celebration and one that makes a 17 or 18 year old child believe they are invincible.  I pray God allows them to remember that they CAN do anything…through Christ who strengthens them!

It’s a throw back kind of day today!

I saw this picture on pinterest and thought O MY, I HAD THIS EXACT SAME ONE! I have loved clouds for a very long time. Looking at this makes me just smile and think back about how much I always LOVED and still do love to get school supplies.

Today, on our trip back to Texas, I got to see a lot of great clouds out of the airplane window. I just love those things. I love GOD’s creations, but especially clouds. LOVE!

It started way back with a Trapper Keeper. Ha!

The Key to Happiness

I was absolutely blessed and honored to speak at the ORE CITY HIGH SCHOOL graduation tonight.

I love our students and I hope I helped make their special night even more memorable.

HERE’S JUST A FEW KEY POINTS I shared with them tonight.

This is not my entire speech, but it’s the part I really hope they listened to.  I said a bit more, but these are the IMPORTANT parts.

… the IMPORTANT KEYS that can only promote, support and contribute to your future happiness.

  • I do not think I’m a perfectly happy person all the time, but I surely strive to be as happy as I can be and if you need some cheering up, I’ll be the first one to try. You should be that for others in your life. THIS IS KEY. Be a big bright shiny smiley face to those around you. You might get weird looks or even a few comments (believe me…it will happen), but that is what makes it even MORE WORTH IT!
  • We should all treasure the time we have with each other. THIS IS KEY! Don’t allow it to slip by. Don’t allow things to go unspoken. Tell the ones you love, that you truly love them. And do it often. We live in the communication age—you could call ‘em, text ‘em, tweet ‘em, follow ‘em, like ‘em, upload a youtube video, skype and snapchat all at the same time! You probably didn’t know I knew about all that, but I do. Hug people! Squeeze ‘em and tell them that you are there for them—don’t miss the opportunities to do that. And don’t forget to smile at others even if they look at you like you have gone crazy. (don’t be scared!)

  • Don’t judge others…THIS IS KEY!  You don’t truly know where they’ve been or what they are going through. Don’t allow your quick to judge attitude or anything like that to get in the way of you being able to love others. Liking them might be hard to do sometimes and you are not going to like everyone you come in contact with. You already know that, but LOVE should never be a question. You don’t have to like everything about someone to have love for them. And I’m not talking couple-love, give me sugars-love… I’m talking genuine love for humans. When you really, truly figure that out…expect BRIGHTER, HAPPIER and SUNSHINIER SUNNY DAYS (even when it may be cloudy outside!)

  • Always look ahead. You can’t change the past so why dwell on it? THIS IS KEY! Work daily on moving forward and away from things that get you down and that sometimes want to creep back up from the past. Don’t let it! Look ahead to the things you CAN DO instead of anything you didn’t already do. Leave the past in the past.

  • IT’S ALL ABOUT HOW YOU LOOK AT IT. If you didn’t hear it, you could read it—it’s written on my wall right behind my desk. This saying has been a motto, slogan, mantra of mine for many years— which basically means that any situation, no matter how bad it may be, can be looked at in a different way. There is always something good going on. Sometimes, you just gotta find it! Even if you have to break the shovel out and dig for it–Keep looking—because it truly is all about how you look at it.

  • And the last key I’m going to share with you tonight, and to me, the most important…Don’t hold grudges no matter what—THIS IS KEY! Grudges are heavy. All they do is slow ya down. Without those ugly, nasty, heavy things, you too can feel even LIGHTER and more able to travel through this life with ease. Who doesn’t want a smooth path to travel? Grudges make your way full of pot holes and obstacles. They cloud your mind and make your outlook dark.  Without them you can have more time to do the fun things you want to do, because you aren’t wasting time thinking about some stupid grudge. There’s no body in this world worth holding a grudge against. It doesn’t hurt them by you holding it, because most of the time, they don’t even care. There’s a quote that says: Holding a grudge is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die. (GET IT?) Grudges poison your soul and only allow you to do and say ugly things. Don’t waste your time on that. You don’t have time for that…Ain’t nobody got time for that!

You hold the key to so many things, but most importantly, you hold the key to your own happiness. I hope that something I said tonight helps you open that door!

Attention Span

Pick a chair!

Sit down, get ready and LISTEN UP!!!

Attention span. How’s yours?
Can you sit down and listen for more than 5 minutes? 10 minutes? 30 Minutes?

I know a lot argue that they just can’t listen because they have a focus deficiency problem. I do believe people suffer from this, but really, for the most part, people decide on their attention span. Yep, it’s like one of those many things you have to make a decision about. Do I listen? Do I not listen? How long do I pay attention?

Really you are thinking: IS THIS WORTH MY TIME? Is this interesting? What will I benefit if I listen to this?

One of my students told me today that I talk in circles. Haha! This makes me laugh, because what she called talking in circles was actually what a lot of teachers do when trying to teach or demonstrate something. I was repeating myself. I had demo’d a new project and basically went over it more than once, trying to explain it in a different way each time. Some students still heard nothing I said even though they appeared to be attentive.
Some, like this student with their comment, listened to everything! It’s their choice to listen. I know this. I don’t give up on them. Yes, it’s frustrating at times and I wish the chair they were sitting in or something could wake up their bodies somehow to perk up and listen better, but I do love what I do even if I only have a few students who REALLY listen.

Attention span. How’s yours?
