What’s YOUR excuse?

Excuses, excuses…

I asked one of my friends last night if they were still going to the same church to which they replied,

“No. I just don’t have time.”

How much time does going to church really take though?

I know some churches still do Sunday morning AND Sunday evening services, then there are Wednesday evenings.  From my own personal observations, most people only attend Sunday morning.  So, say it’s just Sunday morning service you go to…you don’t even come early for Sunday School.  I’m not sure about all churches, but our service starts at 11 and is usually out about 12.  That is…ONE HOUR.  Add on get-ready time (which you have to get clothes on and stuff for the day anyway, right?) and then some drive time depending on where you go (and I am almost certain, there is a church close to you)….STILL, at the max–TWO HOURS, right?  ..and you don’t have time?

I’m not judging!  That is not my job.  I’m just trying to understand.  I wasn’t trying to pry into anything either.  I was simply asking.  They could have just said a simple, “No.”  I probably wouldn’t have asked another question.  I’m not the question asker, that is my better-half.  But them offering an excuse for not going got my mind spinning.

Then I remembered there was this song I heard once about EXCUSES.

Excuses, excuses, you’ll hear them every day.
And the Devil he’ll supply them, if the church you stay away.
When people come to know the Lord, the Devil always loses
So to keep them folks away from church, he offers them excuses.

In the summer it’s too hot. And, in the winter, it’s too cold.
In the spring time when the weather’s just right, you find some place else to go.
Well, it’s up to the mountains or down to the beach or to visit some old friend.
Or, to just stay home and kinda relax and hope that some of the kin folks will start dropping in.

Well, the church benches are too hard. And, that choir sings way too loud.
Boy, you know how nervous you get when you’re sitting in a great big crowd.
The doctor told you, “Now, you better watch them crowds. They’ll set you back.”
But, you go to that old ball game because you say “it helps you to relax.”

Well, a headache Sunday morning and a backache Sunday night.
But by work time Monday morning, you’re feeling quite alright.
While one of the children has a cold, “Pneumonia, do you suppose?”
Why the whole family had to stay home, just to blow that poor kid’s nose.

Well, the preacher he’s too young. And, maybe he’s too old.
The sermons they’re not hard enough. And, maybe they’re too bold.
His voice is much too quiet-like. Sometimes he gets too loud.
He needs to have more dignity. Or, else he’s way too proud.

Well, the sermons they’re too long. And, maybe they’re too short.
He ought to preach the word with dignity instead of “stomp and snort.”
Well, that preacher we’ve got must be “the world’s most stuck up man.”
Well, one of the lady’s told me the other day, “Well, he didn’t even shake my hand.”

Excuses, excuses, you’ll hear them every day.
And the Devil he’ll supply them if the church you stay away.
When people come to know the Lord, the Devil always loses
So to keep them folks away from church, he offers them excuses.
So to keep them folks away from church, he offers them excuses.

I know that song may list some things we have all done instead of going to church.  I’m not pointing any fingers!  If I were doing that, I’d be pointing at myself.  I believe the song creates the list to exaggerate the fact that we all have goofy excuses why we don’t attend a church.

OHhhhh and before you go getting huffy about this blog today… I know a lot of people believe in God, but don’t go to church.  I have friends who love Jesus, but just don’t have a church family.  I understand that people take that stand…

I really don’t know personally.  When I didn’t go to church, I didn’t really know Jesus.

PERSONALLY…I just enjoy church and LOVE my church family.  I have so many friends that I wouldn’t have if I had not gotten into church.  I wouldn’t have known I could really carry a tune in a bucket if I hadn’t of gone to church.  I get to sing a lot of places now.  I learned how to fellowship with other Christians and I continue to learn so much in studying the Bible with others.  I love LOVE and church is just another place to give and receive it.  I could go on, but I think I’ve said enough.

What’s YOUR excuse?

HE gives you a song!

I’ve been thinking and praying about what to sing at church tomorrow…

I EVEN GOOGLED “What should I sing in church tomorrow?”   So, this is what came up:

Jesus said “Here I stand, won’t you please let me in?”

And you said “I will tomorrow”

Jesus said “I am he who supplies all your needs”
And you said “I know, but tomorrow, ooh, tomorrow, ill give my life
tomorrow, I thought about today, but it’s so much easier to say”

Tomorrow, who promised you tomorrow,
better choose the lord today, for
tomorrow very well might be too late.

Jesus said “Here I stand, won’t you please take my hand?”
And you said “I will tomorrow”

Jesus said “I am he who supplies all your needs”
And you said “I know, but tomorrow, ooh, tomorrow, ill give my life
tomorrow, I thought about today oooohh,
but it’s so much easier to say”

Tomorrow, who promised you tomorrow,
better choose the lord today, for
tomorrow very well might be too late.

And who said tomorrow would ever come for you

still you laugh and play and continue on to say

forget about tomorrow
won’t you give your life today
oohh please don’t just turn and walk away

tomorrow, tomorrow is not promised
don’t let this moment slip away
your tomorrow could very well begin today

I am burdened with names of people who need Jesus.  Praying for them is not a burden.  I mean, I ache for them.  I want them to know Jesus.  I pray so hard that God softens their hearts and shows them HE is the Lord…JESUS is the ticket, the key, the path to being happy in this life and eternally happy.  I want Him for everyone!  So, when this song came up that I had never heard before, I KNEW GOD gave me this song!  He does it all the time… not only did He give me this song, he gave me the ability to sing it.  I struggled some and prayed a bunch and when I finally sang it all the way through correctly, I CRIED.  It is such an emotional thing when you know GOD DID IT.  He did it through you, for you and is going to use it for others.  That is the most amazing feeling.  To know YOUR GOD loves you and cares for you and gives you a song.

HE GIVES YOU A SONG!  **sing it** …whatever it may be!

Jesus is THE LIGHT

We had our candlelight service tonight…

The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. (John 1:9 ESV)

As I said yesterday, I’m going to add some BLESSING stories to the blog this week.

I’m the youth leader at our church.  Seriously, years ago when I decided JESUS should be in my heart totally and I converted from being Catholic, to Baptist, I would have never thought I’d actually be TEACHING SUNDAY SCHOOL or be any kind of leader in our church.  I was very timid about my faith and as a Catholic, I somehow believed that my religion and faith were something that I was not supposed to shout about.  I have since figured out that I AM ABSOLUTELY SUPPOSED TO SHOUT ABOUT IT and let everyone know that Jesus is my Lord and Savior.  With that lesson learned, I have done a lot of different things in our church (and in my life) and one is being our youth group leader.

I had been talking to God about the youth group.  I felt like I was kind of in a rut with them.  I’ve been doing it now for about 10 years.  I feel like sometimes I tell them the same stories and use the same analogies and I need someone to come in and help or at least bring in some different insight.

I talked to my husband about this as well.  Of course, he told me I needed to pray.  Duh.  I knew I needed to pray.  I didn’t pray specifically really.  I just asked God to help me with the youth.   Even my husband said who in the church would help?  He’s the main skeptic in our relationship, but I was with him.  I couldn’t think of anyone who might want to.  So I prayed.  AND PRAYED.

We were planning a lock in for the youth and a young lady (I say young because it seems everyone is getting younger than I am these days ..haha)  –she is married and has children but I’m still probably 10 years older than she is.. asked me if she could come help.  I was like SURE!  She came to the lock in  and started coming in to the youth class and is going to help with the class.  I love this gal.  She’s funny and I love her girls and her family.   They are great people.  God didn’t put her in my head when I was praying or talking with my husband or thinking WHO WHO WHO, because He knew.  He knew He would bless me with the CHOSEN ONE.   HALLELULIA!  GOD PROVIDES.  GOD knew what I needed–all I had to do was ask—He knew who He would send.  Amen!

WOW! Again, WOW!

I pray for so many things.  I do it often and when no one would even think I’m praying.  I, of course, get on my knees and bow to God, but I also drive, walk, sit, cook, hug, smile, dance (only my kids see that!), paint, draw, sing, read, type, etc. AND PRAY.  At times, I feel as if I’m bombarding God with so many requests.  I pray for…

  • My children’s protection and that they grow up to find THE ONE God has for them as well as to be responsible individuals.  (that seems like a big one, but soooo important to me and I know to God!)
  • My family’s protection.  Our well-being and happiness, of course.
  • My friends.  More specifically, those who have lost their spouses, here recently.  Oh, how my heart hurts for them.  God knows.  He will bless them.  I know it.  I’m THAT confident in His power.
  • Our church.  The expansion and extension of God’s hand in our community.  Those who are leaders in our church–that they lead with the entire congregation in mind and they always consult God and only say what HE wants them to say.  (that includes me as a youth teacher)
  • Our bosses and other leaders in our life.  I pray they will be able to take on all of the things that come their way and that they lead with God first.
  • My students, my classroom, my school, education in general.  I pray God is not pushed out of our school as He is in so many places.  Jesus should have a place in all aspects of our lives ESPECIALLY schools.  Our kids need Him.  I plead for this!

…and truly, the list goes on and on…  I feel as if I am just babbling to God some days.  I don’t mean in a way where I’m not sincere in my petitions.  I mean, I just think I’m asking for so much that I’m like that kid at Christmas who circles all the toys in the Sears catalog!  I want it all!  I want all the blessings!  I want those around me to feel His presence and his provision!  I feel so greedy at times.

Then I remember:

Matthew 7:7-8

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.…

My mind is seriously blown by so many verses in the Bible.  They are there, though, to do exactly that! God is unbelievable!  We can’t wrap our minds around His enormous power and constant ability to bless us with all we need and so many times what we want.  He is just waiting for us to ask for it!  I love that!  I love God!  I love the fact that He never changes, He loves us and He will always be there no matter what we have done, what we are doing now or what is to come!

Again, WOW!

I just saw this on a church marquee:

God loves each of us as if there were only one of us.”

I actually looked it up and it is a Saint Augustine quote.  He was a catholic priest who lived a horribly sinful life before having a great conversion in faith .  Once he converted, he gave himself wholly to the Lord in everything he did including becoming a priest.  His story is quite interesting and much like a lot of ours.  We all have something we need to give up in order to be SOLD OUT for our God.

The quote is such an awesome statement of the kind of love God has for us.

We are all equal in His eyes.  God loves us all no matter what and He has no “favorites.”  We are not to put ourselves above other people.  We are not to look down on others because of anything–ANYTHING.  Yet, how often do we all do this!?  I know I’ve done it in the past and perhaps I do it at times and do not really know it.  I’m human!  I do strive to be closer to God and more like Jesus.  I want to look at others like He did while on this earth and this quote puts it in perfect perspective.  That is how we should love.

Show brotherly love no matter who it is or what the circumstances are—wow.  I know that is hard.  Believe me! I know that is hard!  It’s hard to love those who aren’t “lovable,” but think about how UNLOVABLE we are at times and God still LOVES US!  Wow.

That right there just makes me want to Praise Him:  THANK YOU LORD!

Check out the lyrics to this song:

A Heart That Forgives

I want a heart that forgives
A heart full of love
One with compassion just like Yours above
One that overcomes evil with goodness and love
Like it never happened, never holding a grudge
I want a heart that forgives that lives and lets live
One that keeps loving over and over again
One that men can’t offend
Because Your Word is within
One that loves without price, like You Lord Jesus Christ
I want a heart that loves everybody….even my enemies
I want to love like You, be like You, just like You did
I want a heart that forgives,…

Listen to the whole song:

God Loves You!

Sharing my notes from the revival again…

There’s nothing better than the Love GOD HAS FOR YOU.
It’s the most powerful thing in the world.

The Key to being satisfied in life is to COMPREHEND God’s great love for YOU!

God loves people who have blown it. Be a person who loves people who have blown it. We have all blown it!

The enemy is lying to people to make them believe that yet can’t go to church because they aren’t good enough.

Only God can heal our wounds … Can forgive our sins.

I know God loves you because…

–He created you.

I will praise You because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made.
Your works are wonderful,
and I know [this] very well. (Psalm 139:14 HCSB)

–God cares about you.

But even the hairs of your head have all been counted. (Matthew 10:30 HCSB)

If you care, you’ll be aware. God cares! He knows us and he cares for us.

Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be arrogant or to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth, but on God, who richly provides us with all things to enjoy. (1 Timothy 6:17 HCSB)

–God has a special purpose for your life.

For I know the plans I have for you”-[this is] the Lord’s declaration-“plans for [your] welfare, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11 HCSB)

You should say…
God loves me so much that I spill all that love to others around you… No matter what they look like or smell like!
No matter who they are or where they come from OR if they have “blown it!”
