I LOVE TO LEARN! (have I said that before?)

This summer I was introduced to a SUMMER LEARNING CHALLENGE which has been put together by Todd Nesloney.  This dude is definitely a LIFE LONG LEARNER and I bet he’s a great principal!

We are in the 8th week challenge.  I’ve enjoyed learning some great stuff!  This week is really cool with the Google drive and docs.  I’m about to do the letter to my future students.  I’m not sure how that is going to go.  We will see.

If you have time and feel like LEARNING, go check out this blog which includes all the challenges thus far.  I do love going back to work in August, but I do love my summer too!  Two great things about teaching!   I will hate to see summer go this year and hate for our challenges on this blog to end, but I KNOW I will find new challenges as the new school year begins.  YAY!  I LOVE TO LEARN!

You can go to twitter and #SummerLS to read all kinds of tweets about what we’ve learned this summer.

Excitement sharpens Excitement!

Just recently, I was so honored to serve on staff at a TEXAS Association of Student Councils Summer Leadership Workshop. We were at SFA there in Nacogdoches and I was the Advisors Consultant. It was such a fun time, because not only was I able to share at our advisor sessions, but I learned so much from the other advisors, got to see my super student council friends and met so many new fun and interesting people. Connections are so important and they truly do energize you!

Check this out:

Excitement sharpens excitement!

I came home excited about so many things. I have new ideas, a new outlook on some old projects and a renewed attitude toward this vocation and calling I know GOD has blessed me with. Charging your batteries is something we must all take time to do and this workshop did just that for me!

This workshop also reminded me that being a life long learner helps keep that excitement as well. It also helps keep ya feeling young! It might even hold those wrinkles and grey hair back. (Lotion and hair dye helps a little too…hehe) So, keep learning!

If you stop learning, you will forget what you already know. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭19‬:‭27‬ CEV)
I don’t want to forget what I know!!!

Make connections.
Keep learning.
Stay excited…
Excitement sharpens excitement!!!

Thank you TASC for this workshop opportunity and thank you to all those who attended those fun, learning-full, EXCITING advisor sessions!!!

Here’s my excited face:

Another reason I love what I do…

This seriously is another reason I love what I do.   Some of our students really get into dress up days.  Today, with Halloween, we had a ton of crazy costumes.  Some giddy-ups were ghoulish and creepy while others were funny and lighthearted.  I tend to enjoy the more hilarious ones.  This one above, along with his blue twin, was my favorite of all the crazies.

I love to see kiddos getting into fun times during high school.  I know, I know, I KNOW…they need to be there to learn.  Learning is important, I believe in learning.  If you have read a few of my blogs, you know how I feel about learning.

Learning is essential, but having fun while you are in high school–GOOD CLEAN RED RIBBON WEEK/ HALLOWEEN DAY FUN–is essential too!  I always tell our students at our beginning of the year assembly that the more involved you are (within reason, of course–don’t want to spread themselves too thin), the much more positive, enjoyable time this thing called high school will be!

So, today, was one of those days that makes high school FUN(ner).   I even saw a former student of mine at the game tonight and let him know that I was talking about HIS COSTUME from a couple of years back at school today.  His was the best all time disturbingly hilarious costume ever.  I sure wish I had access to the photo of him to post it here, but I’m not sure where it is.  Due to it’s disturbing quality, I may want to keep it under wraps anyway.  It was not gory at all.  It was one of those that kind of puts you in shock.  Here is this popular football player type guy …in a tutu!  Not going into any further detail, but it was one of those days like today—IT WAS A FUN high school event that is just ONE more reason I LOVE WHAT I DO!

Here’s a pan-pic of the group we had dressing up today.

((Think about huddling up and working together!  I love this visual!))

Relationship is key.  It is important to build relationships in every area of your life.  The ultimate relationship, of course, is with Jesus.  That is a period, the end, no discussion there–JESUS is the answer to everything!  #1, numero uno, the TOPS, –THE FIRST.

After you have that figured out, all other relationships can be right.

That seems kind of deep to start out a blog on collaboration, but I just wanted to clarify and identify that relationship as the first one everyone should get straight BEFORE ALL OTHERS.

All aspects of our lives are better when we are able to collaborate –work together, create a team, move toward a common goal — with others.  It is how I learn best and I can bet MOST people would feel the same way.  Believe me, I can tell when a person is the total opposite.  They are the ones that CONTINUOUSLY to tell you all they know without allowing you to speak at all, bark orders, interrupt you, add their comments even when not wanted, try and make you feel unintelligent and basically strive to undermine anything you set out to do or accomplish even if it takes lying or better described as speaking falsities which they refer to as facts.  So, if you are one of those, then this blog is not for you.  If you are A TEAM PLAYER, keep reading…

Today was a wonderful day of COLLABORATION.  We teachers were able to team up with teachers of the same subject area from other schools and share ideas, lessons, projects and whatever else we saw fit to talk about.  I was blessed to be able to be teamed up with an art teacher  who is super talented, smart and so very sweet.  You can go check out the great stuff she does on her FB page: KELLY LAMINACK.  Besides being a great art teacher, she also owns a gallery where any one can be a great artist!

Fun fun stuff!

Compared to our morning yesterday which consisted of a three hour lecture on STAAR testing data and how we can make our students think (UG!), this morning was like an AWESOME PRIZE you might win from Publishers Clearing House!  I do not exaggerate.  Just telling you how I really feel.  😉

More about today: I got some great ideas, definitely for sure will use a couple new projects we talked about and am looking into some new supplies I never knew existed.  WOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO!  If you have read my blog at all, you may of caught onto the fact that I love to learn NEW STUFF and I relish and cherish the time I get to create and explore art of all kinds, but especially with a new idea and NEW ART MEDIA!  *another holler here*

So, thank you for today’s COLLABORATION opportunity OCISD!!!  Loved it!  ***Thumbs up!*** Five Stars!

And a super special thank You Jesus for allowing me to develop great relationships, because I put the one I have with YOU FIRST!

Creativity is no longer an ELECTIVE

The Awesome OC Team

Tomorrow, I **GET TO** join two of my fun fellow teachers as well as my super duper boss (no, I’m not trying to butter him up, I really do like him a bunch) in teaching a session at our local region center.  They are putting on this two day workshop called KEEP CALM AND TEACH ON.

Our session is about using Twitter as your PLN (personal learning network).  I am going to post my handout below so I can share it on our Twitter account.  ((you can follow our session tweets @OCTweetTeam))

If you are here to look at my daily blog, because you are one of my AWESOME followers or just happened upon this “AWESOME CLAWSON” blog…check out these cool ways to network on the handout.  I really enjoy using twitter to LEARN.  If you are a regular on my blog, you know LEARNING IS ONE MY FAVES!

If you attended our session at Region VII, THANK YOU FOR ACCESSING this from the @OCTweetTeam page!  I hope you enjoyed our session and LEARNED something that will help you broaden your PLN.  Thanks for choosing our session!

If you click on the image above, it will open up larger.  If you still can’t see it, you should be able to enlarge it with the internet browser you are using.  If you still can’t see it, you can email me: and I will send you the file as a pdf.

Notes can help …

Found some notes I wrote to share with my students on the first day of school a couple of years ago and wanted to blog them today:

You are here and I love you–no matter who you are, what kind of student you are, you are loved.

How you can have the I LOVE YOU! Attitude:  If you come in thinking you’d love something, more than likely, you will.  If you come in thinking the opposite, more than likely THAT will be.  Do you want to be happy?  You have to choose to be for that to actually happen.  Have a great attitude toward life in general.

EXPECTATIONS –you should know what is expected of you.  Everyone knows this, but sometimes we need reminded.  (Go over general rules here.)

ART is all about YOU–put your heart in everything.  You rep yourself when you make a piece of art.

You should want to better yourself by learning.

Get the best out of every class you take–every situation you are in.  (Talk about grades here.)

Do NOT come behind my desk unless given permission.

The last one cracked me up a little.  That rule was so important to come up with, because if you could see my room–you would understand.  There’s so much stuff back behind my desk as including wires I have taped to the floor so I lessen the chance of tripping and hurting myself.  Sometimes it works!  HAHA!

The rest of the stuff I wrote down, we can all apply to life…

I LOVE because it makes life BETTER…BEST EVEN!

I try and keep the rules in mind. (it helps ALOT)

Whatever you create (or do)…it’s representing YOU.  That is so important to remember.

LEARNING IS IMPORTANT (yes, this is kind of a theme this week in my bloggin’ and I talk about it alot)

And the second to last one up there is like my saying: IT’S ALL ABOUT HOW YOU LOOK AT IT.  You have to look at the best in all situations if you want to be able to except whatever comes your way.  It’s a given.

Sometimes NOTES help us remember that we are still on track or we need to adjust some.

SKYPE and Oh boy my favorite: LEARNING!

I SKYPE ‘d with an art teacher from Canada this morning. What a neat, cool, fun NEW (I know, it’s been around a while, but new for me) way to learn and connect.

We are going to get our classes together and we will have the opportunity to compare cultures along with art, artists, projects and products. It’s so super exciting!

Teaching is so much fun and I’m blessed to be able to do it for a living, but even FUNNER (I know, it’s “more fun”) than teaching is LEARNING! I love love LOVE learning new things.

Collaborating with others is so important, because other people can show you something new all the time. If you don’t think you have something to offer anyone else, JUST TRY IT! I promise, you start sharing (and remember, “sharing is caring”) and swapping info and more SOONER than later you will have LEARNED SOMETHING NEW!!!

Maybe you are one of those people that says: “I don’t want to learn anything new, I am too *PUT YOUR EXCUSE HERE* to learn anything new.” Well, hmmm…

I’m sorry.
