I just finished going through the Bible again within this last year. I was so excited when I woke up this morning thinking that I get to start over again! Every time I listen to the same verses I heard a year ago, I find something new from the reading.
Like this morning, the Proverb started the whole theme of my day: HAVE A TEACHABLE SPIRIT!
Purpose and Theme
1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
2 for gaining wisdom and instruction;
for understanding words of insight;
3 for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
doing what is right and just and fair;
4 for giving prudence to those who are simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young—
5 let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance—
6 for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.
When I heard the word “simple” in the verses above, I giggled out loud! I thought about how many people would really be offended by that. People in general don’t like to be called “simple.”
Personally, I have referred to myself as simple in the since that I like for things to be simple. I have even said before when things seem to get a little complicated, “I’m just too simple.” I don’t like circumstances that seem to complex, intricate, involved, convoluted, thorny, or tortuous to just list a few adjectives. I like things to be SIMPLE.
After doing a little research, on the website BibleGateway.com it has “simple” defined in the footnotes:
Proverbs 1:4 The Hebrew word rendered simple in Proverbs denotes a person who is gullible, without moral direction and inclined to evil.
After reading that, I didn’t giggle. I realize that the proverbs are written for us SIMPLE people who basically need straightening out. We need a new way of thinking! As it says, they are for insight and instruction. They are like TIPS. So many people want a quick list of tips when needing advice. The proverbs aren’t super quick and the Bible itself is a pretty long read, but it’s the best “LIST OF TIPS” we can ever get our hands on. We need it to renew our thinking. We need it to renew our mind, our spirit and set our way on a path that is more righteous and full of blessings you cannot even fathom!
After listening to the Proverb above, I went on to look up the verses from my daily devo (Jesus is Calling). The theme of the reading was that we should have a teachable spirit. I thought about the Proverb! We are so simple…we need some teaching! The verse below talks about renewing our mind. How perfect this whole lesson was for me today on this brand new day, starting the Bible once again on this shiny first day of the NEW YEAR. New Year–New Thinking!
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2
I pray you start your New Year with a need to be taught through the Bible. I hope for your renewing! I long for continued renewing for myself, my family and friends. May this year of 2014 be full of blessings that are apparent, evident and super obvious. With each blessing, may we all praise God and tell others how they too can have a (Happy)
New Year and New Thinking!
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. -Matthew 5:16
Most of my written blogs are healthy reflections mainly of a realization or reaction I have to the things about me.
Today will not be any different.
I would like to reflect on the year of ’13. It’s been a year full of blessings. Without going through every single one of the, because that would be a super long list, I just want to concentrate on a few.
Our first big blessing was when our second child asked Jesus into his heart. He has grown so much since that day as well which has been an amazing site to see. Our first child asked Jesus into her heart about 4 years ago. It makes me so happy to know that they are both looking to God. I pray that continues through all of the times ahead.
We were so fortunate to be able to go with our church on a mission trip. It was a trip where we met new people, but mostly where we were able to talk about what Jesus does for us–daily. I love being able to share Him no matter where we are. The mission helped both of my children immensely in their walk as well and I believe strengthened our family as a whole.
Disney. The trip to Disney we were able to go on was a trip of many firsts. From first plane rides to seeing the most magnificent fireworks display I’ve ever witnessed. As they say, it was magical! I know God allowed us to do this and I thank Him for giving us trips like these to enrich our lives. He blesses us with so much!
I was blessed personally with so many different things that, as I said before, I’d be here all night typing about them all. I believe the more I thank God for the blessings He pours on us, the more He rains them down. Blessed, blessed, SO BLESSED!
As this day comes to an end and the new day, new YEAR is rung in, I just want to keep praising God for allowing it all. No matter what 2014 has in store, I know that WITH GOD, it will be AMAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZING–with some extra ZING! He promises us that through Him, we will do good works! He’s got it all ready for us… I’m so excited!
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10
