National Day of Service

Serving others should not be a hard task.

We should want to do what we can for other people.

Today is MLK NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE.

From http://www.nationalservice.gov/mlkday:

On this Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service, we reflect on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through a national day of service across the country. Share your story of service throughout the day on social media using #MLKDay and follow the impact on all of our official accounts.

…He who is greatest among you, shall be your servant. -MLK, Jr

This is a holiday, yes, but I hope you were part of something more than just sleeping in late or watching Netflix all day.

As student council advisor at the school I work, I’m so proud of the students who came out and were part of a group that went to visit a local nursing home today for MLK National Day of Service.  Those kiddos get it–they get that we should serve others.  They gave their day off to go make others feel like they are important.  I’m so proud of them!

I hope you were part of something today.  I hope you were part of a service to others.

Words we should hear AND SAY more often…

I love you, You are awesome, you are great, thank you, please, excuse me, I was wrong, may I have this dance….

There are so many words that are nice to hear.  I love it when someone says, “You smell good.”  BUT OUT OF ALL THE WORDS IN THIS WORLD, I truly believe, we don’t express ourselves enough when it comes to these…

I AM SO PROUD OF YOU!

I know some of the phrases I listed above kind of say or mean the same thing, but don’t beat around the bush…say it like you mean it, with intent and mean exactly what you say:

I AM PROUD OF YOU.

I heard these words earlier in the week from my 2nd grade teacher.  She had me in class YEARS AGO (I’ve actually counted them…), but even though she hasn’t been in my daily life for many years, those words coming from her beautiful little self made my heart smile so!  I’ve thought about those words all week.  She made me feel more accomplished with that little sentence than any plaque or trophy ever could.

We NEED those words.

We need to say those words… not just think of them.

I have let those words go across the marquee of my mind so many times and not uttered them.  Why?  I’m not sure at all, but I make it my vow to voice them when I think them from now on.  I want to bless others as Mrs. Lattimore did me.  She may never know how awesome she made me feel, but I will pass that feeling forward.

I encourage you to do it too!  Tell those that you are proud of…

Say it audibly, clearly and intently, OUT-LOUD,

“I AM PROUD OF YOU.”

I’m so proud to be a REBEL.

MY SATURDAY MORNING FB POST:

So proud of THE REBELS–all of them–not just one kid…not just one team…all of them. So honored and blessed to work at OCHS. If you look back, my posts, WIN OR LOSE, say good things about our students. I’m always a fan, always a REBEL. #RebelPride #SchoolSpirit #Forever

I’ve been a Rebel since about 1976 when I first stepped into Mrs. Lynn’s class.  She was so intimidating and scary.  She taught me though.  I learned.  I eventually realized even though she was very strict, she loved us.  That is what a teacher does.  They love.

Here I am many, many, many years later teaching at the same school I graduated from.  Through those years, I was a rebel in so many different ways, but always a loyal Rebel even when I taught at a different school with a much different mascot.

There have been several students come through my classroom here at OCHS.  They come in all different shapes, sizes, learning abilities, strengths, weaknesses, talents, attitudes, character, and so on.  Some, actually most, have insecurities I recall having when I was their age.  Others have strong opinions about events, other students and classes they take–and they don’t mind voicing them.  I remember being that exact same way as well.  ((I know yesterday’s post was a little negative about the strong talkers, but I know I was once right there–“wasting my time.”))

However they come, I love them.  I support them.  I hope to teach them more than what the class is called.   I hope to show them things about life that if not understood now, perhaps, one day they will remember.

Our football team is on a major winning streak right now.  If you know anything about Texas football, you know that is a big deal.  Win or lose, though…I’m proud of all of our students who are involved at our school –from the player to the fan, the athlete to the scholar.  They are all important.  Period.

…and no matter what…

I’m so proud to be a REBEL.

SUPER PROUD and EXHAUSTED

The student council I advise ran for a state office and the last three days have been hectic, insane, chaotic, interestingly fun and AWESOME all rolled up into one huge STU.CO.TASTIC trip!

I’ve had students amaze me and make me crazy and make me PROUD.

We didn’t win the office at state, but all my students are WINNERS! …they did a great job and deserve to be proud.  I am proud of all of ’em and can’t wait to see all the future greatness that comes out of this bunch!  They worked so hard at doing so many projects this year that help CRUSH CANCER which is something I am on a continuous mission to do (among many other things, of course).  I could list all the projects they created and completed, but I’d be typing my fingers off.   I just hope all this stu.co. stuffbgave them life long lessons that support them through anything they come up against in their SOON TO COME adult life.  (man, I’m going to miss this year’s seniors as I do so many of my past ones!)

I’m one SUPER DUPER BLESSED Stu.Co. Advisor. —and I’m exhausted!  HA!  No, really.
