STORM OBSERVATION

We have endured so many storms here lately in East Texas.

As I type this, Mark Skirto, our local station’s chief meteorologist is wound up.  Considering the craziness of the storms and sighting of a twister they hope is not on the ground, his anxiousness is somewhat justifiable.

A town not too far from us had a tornado travel through and created havoc of all kinds.  They are having to restart and rebuild a huge area of their lives.  Part of the elementary school even had to cancel school for the rest of this semester.

Storms can cause so much damage.  Tornadoes create the look that a huge monster came through stomping, chomping and wadding up buildings like we would a piece of paper.

Storms are so scary for us, because we truly have no control.

Thinking about this, I thought about LIFE.  We do have some control over things we do.  I mean, we have to make certain decisions and controlling our bladder is something we really want to keep in check….

BUT this big picture of life that we are in…

we are not in control.

People take this in what I’ve observed as two different ways–

1. Some understand this and lean not on their own understanding, but believe it will all be well.  These people look at things positively, knowing that it will work out.  I’m not saying bad things don’t happen to these people, but no matter what happens to them, the storms of life don’t wreck them.  These people pick up the pieces and move on.  They learn from their experiences–good or bad.  It truly is all about how you look at it.  ((A lot of these people admit to being believers and truly do believe.))

2.  Others understand this, but try and buck it.  They try to hold on to control and always complain that nothing goes exactly how they thought it was supposed to.  The storms of life to them are devastating.  They worry, they fear and are constantly stressed about life.  The storms stop them from moving forward.  They tend to always go backward or stay stagnant in whatever storm they have chosen to dwell in.  It truly is all about how you look at it.  ((A lot of these people admit to being believers, but don’t truly believe.))

Just my storm observation.

OH NO! The lights went out!

Today, mid sentence, mid song, mid day… the lights went out.  They went off, kids cooed and screamed, they came back on, the kids booed and one even began an unsavory curse word (thank GOD he stopped before finishing it and I just took it that he wanted his “mother”) …THEN THEY WENT OFF again and stayed off for a little over an hour.  Within that hour, the day seemed to come to a screeching halt.   The students in my class at the time, did continue their art, but all the buzz was we would get out if they were out for long.

Within minutes after that period ended and another began, there were rumors circling about how no one could keep them there after 30 minutes with no lights.  I laughed.  The kids were talking about other schools being without power.  They didn’t know.  The rumors that were conjured up in a matter of seconds were actually quite entertaining.

I also got to hear stories about trees falling in yards over the bad weather weekend and how families were trying to continue life without electricity.  Some stories were short and sweet while others were still going on since we did have some students at school today who got ready in the dark this morning (and some who didn’t try and weren’t there).

HOW DID WE EVER GET HERE???  How can we not be “normal” without our lights on?

I’m in NO WAY saying I like my electricity to be off.  I’m just saying how can we not just continue with life without it when we know it will def return soon.  I do admit that it is hard when it seems to disappear at night and I like to have a fan on to sleep.  BUT REALLY PEOPLE… why can’t we be OK with the lights off?

I have thought about this all afternoon.  I’ve come to this…

We are so conditioned–and I’m not just talking about air/conditioning altho that definitely a luxury we have come to know and love.  (especially in TEXAS)  I’m talking about lights, gadgets, technology, etc. that will only function with the life that electricity gives it!  We have come to depend on it all.  Again, not saying it’s bad.  I love that God allowed all these blessings to abound!

But I also know, just like the lights going off, our lives are not always full of electricity.  We have those days where the energy is sucked out of us, someone has flipped off our light and times get tough.  I told one of my students today who seemed quite distraught that we didn’t get to close down and go home today—that I sure hoped his life didn’t have a lot of bumpy times in it.  He would not be prepared to take it!   The electricity was off for a little over an hour.  It came back on …  this was not a tragedy!  Sometimes in life we worry like that.  We get all freaked out because our lights have gone off…

We have to be prepared for the lights to go out.  We have to be patient and know that God will restore our energy.  Let’s calm down and think of those times that everything was fine and be confident that those times will return—just like the electricity going off…it will come back on.

Take me out to the…

Ball game?  What ball game!?!?  It has rained 9 days out of the last ten and our teams have been unable to play.  I want my ball game!!!

I thank You God for baseball, softball and rain. I am thankful for ALL, BUT PLEASE LORD, give us some shine so we can feel the spring and watch the games.

Amen.

Got this cartoon from an app called GoComics.  I love opening that app to get some funny paper action.  I remember my dad saving me that part of the paper ever Sunday.

Snow and SUNSHINE

This is my fave pic from today’s snow day home from school (2nd time in 8 days).  I love that the sun came out and devoured all of the white fluffy stuff. I’m so ready for warm weather, sunshine and blue TEXAS skies. Thankful for all no matter what, but God knows I have favorites.

Can’t make EVERYONE happy.

“Do what you feel in your heart to be right – for you’ll be criticized anyway.”
Eleanor Roosevelt

This quote came to mind today mainly because so many people are quick to criticize the weather people when we should all keep in mind what their job really entails.  The human race, some more than others, love to criticize others no matter what their job, opinion or actions.  This will always be… that is why I like the Roosevelt quote.  She is so right.  There will always be those who hate on you.  Haters gonna hate.

If you look at any weather forecaster and their record of predictions, we should already know they cannot do their job to perfection (WHO REALLY CAN!  There is always room for improvement!).  THEY are not IN CONTROL of what the weather does.  They can only guess, but calling them Weather Guessers just doesn’t sound right.  Forecasters try to predict correctly with tools and calculations, but sometimes that task is like trying to lasso the wind.   This is definitely true in our part of the world.  Texas weather is crazy!

We are in the middle of a snow day.  It’s a freezing cold, stay at home from school kind of snow day.  This is the kind of day students, no matter what age, LOVE.   From the wide-eyes of a 10 year old at the site of a winter wonderland to the actuality of sleeping in of a 16 year old, it’s all love.  I, as a teacher, would rather not miss a day of work only to have to make it up later, but I must say, I do love seeing the excitement of my children.  (birth and non-birth ones)

The weather here in Northeast Texas as much of Texas is so unpredictable.  Sometimes it makes me crazy, but most of the time, as with any situation, I REJOICE IN IT!  The snow today is beautiful.  I don’t want to touch it, but it’s beautiful.

I totally admit, I’m not a cold weather lover, but without it, how would I really know that the Texas 90 plus degree summer days are my favorite?  I wouldn’t.  If we didn’t have dark days, how would we truly appreciate the light?  We wouldn’t!  If there weren’t valleys, how could we be in awe of the mountains?  I think you get where I’m going.

I’m just trying to say, give this day and everyday a chance.  Stop being quick to criticize and more quick to find the silver lining, the bright spot…THE JOY!  LOVE, don’t hate.

It is TOTALLY true that you can’t make everyone happy, but you can make YOU happy…just by your attitude.  Find the happiness and joy, rejoice in THAT.  Change your attitude even tho, EVEN THEN, you…

Can’t make EVERYONE happy.

I’M AWESOME!

20130816-075943.jpg

I know and totally realize that when people say they are awesome, it seems quite conceited. I have been called vein. Sometimes I get some giggles when I say I’m AWESOME CLAWSON. (it’s not like I introduce myself like that all the time) A student at summer camp about 4 years ago called me that and it just stuck (even if it was just in MY brain). (BTW, his name was SHABAZ –how cool is that!?)

I know I am not supposed to show PRIDE in a sinful, ugly way, but feeling AWESOME while staying humble CAN be done.

To me, thinking that you are awesome is not a negative and not a sin. God wants us to LOVE us. God don’t make no junk!

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:13-14 ESV

Why not use a great word to describe yourself… I really like the word “awesome.” Maybe I use it a little too much, but it’s MY WORD. I mean, it rhymes with my last name. (thank you husband for giving me that name…my maiden name would only rhyme with BOX or FOX and those are nouns, not descriptive words really)

My point today is, it’s important that we have a good self image. Why don’t we? There are so many reasons. The past, to me is #1. Let’s just make a top 10 list:

  1. THE PAST
  2. WHAT OTHERS SAY
  3. WHAT OTHERS DO TOWARD US
  4. WHAT WE THINK OTHERS THINK ABOUT US
  5. THE FICTION OUR BRAIN CREATES
  6. SLEEPING HABITS
  7. EATING HABITS
  8. THE MIRROR
  9. THE WEATHER
  10. LONELINESS

Maybe these aren’t your TOP TEN but I bet they fit somewhere in your list of reasons why you shouldn’t LOVE YO SELF.

SELF IMAGE and mood is effected by so many things. Some of the things we really can’t help. I mean, the way people think of you? You can treat others the way you want to be treated, but even then, some people still hate you. Who knows why? I do know this, though; YOU SHOULD NOT CONCERN YOURSELF WITH THEM. They have their own self image problems and you should not allow them to mess yours up along with it. DON’T DO IT!

THE PAST–how can you ever change that? So, do not allow it to steal the joy you can have NOW. Move forward!

I could go on and on about reasons why you should feel AWESOME, but really, you have to figure it out on your own. You have to find YOUR HAPPY. I encourage you to do that—DAILY!

THE main, absolute numero uno reason I’M AWESOME is truly, because God tells me I am. He tells me through His word and through His people. He shows me that I live in a great place, I have super friends and I am continuously BLESSED. I cannot praise Him enough for transforming me through the salvation He provided through Jesus. I’ve not always felt I was so awesome. I have (and continue to some days) allowed things in that list up there to take away my awesomeness. When I do that, I’m not thinking about what GOD has done for me. HE IS MY AWESOME!!!

So, if you are one of those who think I’m conceited or roll your eyes at me because of the AWESOME CLAWSON thing…I’m cool with that. You are not the one who helps make me awesome. I know where my AWESOME comes from!!! Thank YOU, LORD!

I pray you can find your AWESOME soon!

He WILL PROVIDE

In the mornings, I like to get up early and walk. Sometimes it’s on a treadmill and other times its outside. Either way, I’m up and talking to God. I thank Jesus for all He did for all of us. I just count my blessings and pray for the day.

No matter what the day brings, I try and keep this thankful attitude through it all. I don’t worry about the weather or what I’m going to need that day. The Lord has shown me over and over that He gives me everything that is required for any situation.

Today was no exception. He provided our mission team with everything. He had planned for the exact amount of crafts for my presentation. And when I forgot a small yet important part of the craft for the evening session, he put an adjusted project in my head. I love the blessings of adversity and talent he pours out. HE never ceases to amaze me. I’m so blessed!

I’m excited to see all the provisions He will supply us with tomorrow. It’s so exciting!!!

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: -2 Corinthians 9:8

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
Lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him
And He will direct your path.
-Prov. 3:5-6
